Panzer named Dean of Research
Effective April 15, Professor Matthew Panzer of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering will be the Dean of Research for the School of Engineering at Tufts University.
As Dean of Research, Panzer will collaborate with the School of Engineering faculty and with other Tufts schools to foster research between departments, schools, and outside sponsors. Panzer will work closely with the School’s Director of Research Administration on all aspects of research administration, including compliance and financial questions.
Panzer brings substantial experience in education administration to the role, serving as director of graduate studies for the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering from 2017-2023. His research in the Green Energy and Novel Electrolytes Lab (GENELab) is driven by the need to develop cleaner, safer, and more sustainable energy solutions across the globe. He seeks to understand how solution-processed materials can be designed and incorporated into novel electrochemical devices that can efficiently and responsibly store and use electrical energy.
Panzer has been recognized for excellence in advising and teaching at Tufts University with numerous awards, including the Henry and Madeline Fischer Award, the Lillian and Joseph Leibner Award for Distinguished Teaching and Advising, and the Recognition of Undergraduate Teaching Excellence (ROUTE) Award. In 2020, he received the Chemistry of Materials Lectureship and Best Paper Award and, in both 2012 and 2017, he received the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center Catalyst Program Award.
Panzer succeeds Fiorenzo Omenetto, Frank C. Doble Professor of Engineering, who has served as Dean of Research since 2015. Professor Omenetto will continue to provide leadership and vision across the university as Special Advisor to the Provost. The School of Engineering extends heartfelt gratitude to Professor Omenetto for his leadership in research and innovation over the past 8 years, and congratulations to Dean Panzer on this new appointment.
